The Importance of Water In-Take in the Summer Months

2023-06-29

Summer is upon us, and with it comes the warm weather, sunshine, and long days spent outdoors.
But as the temperature rises, it’s crucial to be mindful of our hydration levels and to ensure we are
drinking enough water to stay healthy and active during the hot summer months.

There are numerous benefits to staying hydrated throughout the day. Our bodies are made up of over 60% water, which means our cells, tissues, and organs all require adequate hydration to function correctly. Here are some of the reasons why drinking water and staying hydrated during the summer season is so important:

Regulate Body Temperature: When we are dehydrated, our bodies have a more challenging time regulating our internal temperature, which can lead to overheating, fainting, and other heat-related illnesses. Maintaining proper hydration levels can help our bodies stay cool and prevent heat exhaustion.

Boost Physical Performance: Proper hydration is crucial for optimal physical performance, especially
during exercise or other strenuous activities. Water helps to transport oxygen to our muscles, lubricate joints, and prevent cramping, allowing us to push ourselves to our limits during workouts or outdoor activities. Reduce Risk of Illness and Infection: Drinking water helps to flush out toxins and other harmful substances from our bodies, boosting our immune system and reducing the risk of illness and infection. Staying hydrated also helps to keep our mucous membranes moist, making it harder for bacteria and viruses to penetrate and cause infections.

Maintain Healthy Skin: Dehydration can lead to dry, flaky skin, and even fine lines and wrinkles over
time. By drinking plenty of water, we can keep our skin looking healthy, glowing, and youthful
throughout the summer season.

So how much water should we drink to stay hydrated during the summer months? It’s recommended that adults consume at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water throughout the day, and even more, if they are engaging in physical activity or spending time outside in the sun. Drinking other fluids like fruit juices, herbal teas, and coconut water can also help us stay hydrated while adding a bit of flavour and variety to our drinks.

Drinking water and staying hydrated are essential for our overall health and well-being, especially during the summer season. By prioritizing our hydration levels and consuming plenty of fluids throughout the day, we can maintain our physical performance, regulate our body temperature, reduce the risk of illness, maintain healthy skin, and enjoy the warm summer weather to the fullest!
